Act Quickly
Always keep an eye out for pet accidents on your carpets. If a mess sits for a long time, it leaves more of a stain, and can grow more bacteria as well, so take immediate action. This stuff is germy, so you might want to keep a good pair of gloves handy, or a pack of disposable gloves.
Remove Solid Matter
It’s pretty common for pet owners to press down with paper towels on any pet mess on the carpet, but sometimes this can do more harm than good. It’s a fine tactic to soak up urine (and you should do this thoroughly before it dries into the fabric) but you don’t want to push vomit or excrement farther down into the carpet, which will make the stain worse and make bacteria harder to remove. It’s good to hang onto some stiff disposable material like thin cardboard mailers or packaging. Slide this material carefully under the solid matter and carry it off to the toilet. Then return to the spot to finish your carpet cleaning process.
Urine Removal
There’s no easy way to lift urine off the carpet, so it has to be soaked up with paper towels. You may need to press down firmly to soak it all up, so gloves are handy here. You can also press down with your foot in an old shoe or flip-flop. Set a spare paper towel nearby to set your foot on while you throw the wet paper towel into a plastic bag and lay a dry paper towel down to be pressed. Repeat this process until no more urine is being absorbed.
Stain Removal
There are many store-bought pet cleaner sprays available but you can also make your own. Fill a spray bottle with one part vinegar and one part water. You can also use two parts hydrogen peroxide to one part water. Spray the affected area. Let it sit for five to ten minutes before removing the cleaner with paper towels.
